Gilbert Portanier 100 Vallauris

Gilbert Portanier in Vallauris

Atelier Galerie Gilbert Portanier, Vallauris (FR)
September 7–27, 2026
Opening: Saturday, September 5, 2026, 11 a.m.

Gilbert Portanier, that great master of French ceramics, would have turned 100 this year. To mark this special occasion, his wife, Annette Chaillard-Portanier, is exhibiting a very personal selection of ceramics in the studio he designed himself in their home in Vallauris, in the south of France.
Portanier’s work was influenced by a harmonious combination of ceramic form and gestural painting, in which his experimental surface techniques and a free vocabulary of forms opened up the possibilities of what studio ceramics could be. Delicate yet powerful illustrations lend the objects and sculptures their very own radiance, which extends far beyond the purely sculptural. Through his oeuvre he contributed fundamentally to the international recognition of French ceramic art.

In addition, a small publication has been released to mark this occasion presenting the essence of his half-century of creative work. We are delighted that, following the comprehensive tribute to Gilbert Portanier’s Œuvres 2000–2008, published in 2008, this very personal book—featuring an essay by Martine Denis-Linton—is now also being published as part of our program.

Bernhard Schobinger in Houston

Going Underground: The Jewels of Bernhard Schobinger
Ausstellung: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 3. September 2026–3. Januar 2027

One of the most significant artists working in contemporary jewelry today, Bernhard Schobingerreimagines it as a subversive medium, using scavenged and alternative materials to reveal their hidden histories. Going Underground: The Jewels of Bernhard Schobinger

the first U.S. exhibition to examine Schobinger’s career, features pivotal pieces of experimental jewelry and selected sculptures from 1968 to the present, with necklaces, bracelets, and rings drawn from prominent private collections and the holdings of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

The exhibition explores the artist’s work in critical dialogue with the long shadow of World War II, the anarchy of punk music, and the political and cultural forces that have shaped his life. Schobinger’s aesthetic inspirations include Dadaism and Concrete Art. His Swiss cultural inheritance and an abiding interest in Japanese culture have also informed his practice.

Schobinger’s pioneering work invites audiences to explore the ways in which jewelry can be made from detritus, nature, and precious metals in order to provoke new meanings. Unexpected elements are transformed by the artist’s keen eye and meticulous hands: fishing lures and wedding rings foraged over decades of diving in Lake Zurich; metal and asphalt shards dug out of a decrepit New York City street in the late 1970s; glass, nails, and saw blades that were salvaged.

To accomampy the exhibition the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, launched a richly illustrated publication with us.

Joël Faivre-Chalon in Cagnes-sur-Mer

Exhibition: Musée du Bijou contemporain, Cagnes-sur-Mer (F), 19.09.2025–17.05.2026

The Museum of Contemporary Jewelry in Cagnes-sur-Mer is presenting a solo exhibition dedicated to Joël Faivre-Chalon (1953–2020), a renowned French jeweler and a leading figure in contemporary jewelry. Trained in Strasbourg and based in Montpellier, Joël Faivre-Chalon never viewed jewelry as a mere ornament: his pieces are the result of patient research into form (tending toward the minimalist), technical execution, and materials. Joël Faivre-Chalon was equally at ease working with brass and silver as he was with innovative materials such as titanium, Formica®, or carbon fiber.

Thanks to a collection of archives, photographs, drawings, sketches, and a body of works and prototypes generously entrusted to the Musée du Bijou Contemporain by the artist’s wife, the exhibition traces Joël Faivre-Chalon’s artistic career and highlights his creative process.

We are pleased to announce the publication of a comprehensive volume on the work of this extraordinary artist, titled Conceptualising Jewellery. Doing and Sharing / Penser le bijou. Faire et faire savoir in our programm:
