“This book is not just an accompanying volume to the show or an exhibition catalogue, no, it is a much more far-reaching and in-depth publication, in fact I would like to say that it is about an important part of Fulda’s city history that we hold in our hands here.” With these words, the Lord Mayor of Fulda, Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld, presented the publication “Junger Kunstkreis Fulda – Setting out for Postwar Modernism. The Prints”, which was published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Vonderau Museum in Fulda.
More than 3000 visitors saw the exhibition, which has been extended several times and was initiated on the occasion of the 60th founding anniversary of the Junge Kunstkreis (JuKu). The artistically designed catalogue was conceived by Prof. Franz Erhard Walther, Biennale Prize winner.
Heiko Wingenfeld particularly praised the commitment of the author Dr. Carlo Burschel, who grew up in Fulda and initiated and organized both the exhibition and the book project. His aim had been to promote a rediscovery of JuKu’s printed works and to point out the importance of the Young Art Circle in connection with German post-war modernism.
Prof. Walther, for his part, gave many interesting insights into the early years of JuKu as well as into his own career. For example, he highlighted his turn towards the artistic avant-garde in the 1960s – as a conscious rejection of Modernism, which Walther felt was “outdated and worn out”.
