Jiro Kamata in Taiwan

ALIEN Art Centre, Kaohsiung (TW), 4.10.2019–3.5.2020

The ALIEN Art Centre presents Voices, the first major retrospective of the artist Jiro Kamata in Taiwan. Over the past 20 years, the artist has been dealing with the aspects of “optical experience”. Through the use of a series of expressive techniques, thematically guided by both moments of reflection and communication, Jiro Kamata has achieved a unique position in studio jewellery.

Jiro Kamata was born in 1978 to a jewellery dynasty in the old town of Hirosaki in northern Japan. Despite his origins, he instinctively turned against entering the jewellery industry and studied with Otto Künzli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 2000. In his works, various moments condense in a macrocosmos that brings together everyday experiences with a variety of potentialities in order to create and continue a kind of monumental memory.

The first monograph on the work of Jiro Kamata has recently been published in our programme under the title Jiro Kamata: Voices.
